Louisiana-born bassist Roland Guerin is a bassist, producer, and singer-songwriter who has racked up an impressive array of collaborators. He was Allen Toussaint's bassist for many years; he's served as the Musical Director for Dr. John; recorded and toured with Paul Gilbert in support of Behold Electric Guitar, and currently performs in Brian Blade and The Fellowship Band. He's also an Ibanez endorsing Artist who performed on the Blind Boys of Alabama's Grammy-winning Down in New Orleans and the Grammy-nominated Portraits in Blue by Marcus Roberts.
Roland is also an early adopter of the FreqPort FT1 FreqTube, an analog hardware processor that allows users to process their DAW tracks through true-analog tubes as easily as instantiating a plugin.
Roland is currently enjoying an artist residency in Switzerland; he took a few minutes from his busy schedule to share his thoughts on both the hardware and software offerings from FreqPort.
“When I want a natural presence, vibe and tone, I reach for the FT1 FreqTube,” says Roland. “FreqTube allows me to bring out the character, while staying true to the source. I love it!”
Already a vocal advocate of the FT1 FreqTube, Roland immediately jumped on the FT1-EMU plugin emulation when it was announced.
He’s more than happy to share some tricks of his trade.
“When I dial in a setting for my bass I'll start with tweaking the FreqTube Wet Filter, and then I'll dial in the same setting on the Dry Filter and A/B them,” Roland says. “This helps me quickly determine which filter I want to be my starting point. It's usually the Wet Filter. It's so present and clear, but vibey as well. It really brings my bass to life in the track!”
“In this picture, I have the Wet Filter boosting the high mids and the Dry Filter adding a low bump. The Wet Filter really brings out a natural air and tone that just sounds alive!”
Thanks for taking the time, Roland - we appreciate you!
